Artificial intelligence is changing the way we learn. Answers are available almost instantly and information has never been easier to access. While that’s an incredible advantage, it also is important to make sure we don’t lose our curiosity.
Despite what we may think right now, being curious has little to do with technology. I say that because curiosity doesn’t begin with information. It begins with exposure.
When children experience new places, meet different people, or try something they’ve never done before, they naturally begin asking questions. They notice details and make connections. The same is true for adults. We don’t become more curious by sitting still. We become more curious by stepping into unfamiliar situations.
Throughout my life, some of my greatest lessons didn’t come from a classroom. They came from living in France, traveling throughout Asia, working in different cities, and experiencing cultures that challenged the way I thought. Reading about another country teaches you facts. Living there changes your perspective. Those experiences become part of who you are. That doesn’t mean technology such as AI isn’t valuable.
Like any tool, it can help us learn faster, organize information, and even encourage exploration. But it should never replace firsthand experiences or genuine conversations. AI can summarize knowledge, but it can’t recreate the feeling of walking through a museum, exploring a new city, hiking a trail, or sitting across the table from someone whose life is completely different from your own.
As leaders and parents, we have an opportunity to create those moments intentionally. Take the trip. Visit the museum. Explore the county fair. Ask questions together. Have fun while encouraging your children and yourself to remain learners.
The more experiences you collect, the more curious you become. And curiosity has a remarkable way of opening doors you never knew existed.
