Handling Unexpected Challenges

Creating Disney Magic Episode 591 Handling Unexpected Challenges

“Leaders don’t need to have all the answers. They just need to know how to get the right answer quickly.”

Unexpected challenges show up for everyone. They don’t check your calendar or don’t care about your plans. They just arrive, usually at the worst possible time. I’ve learned over the years that what leaders should be more concerns with isn’t the unexpected thing that happens. It’s how quickly and calmly you respond when it does.

I’ve dealt with this my entire career, whether it was at Hilton, Marriott, or with Disney. Guests don’t want to hear your long-term strategy when there’s a problem in front of them. They want it handled now. And the same is true in life. When something breaks, fails, or goes sideways, the worst thing you can do is ignore it or hope it gets better on its own.

My approach has always been simple. Stop. Think. Decide. Ask yourself how important this issue is right now. If it’s critical, you stop doing whatever else you’re doing and take care of it. Waiting almost always makes things worse. Problems don’t age well.

Sometimes you can fix the issue yourself. Sometimes you can’t. That’s when you call someone who has the authority or the expertise to help. The key is that it gets fixed. I’ve never believed leaders need to have all the answers. They just need to know how to get to the right answer quickly.

Experience helps you stay calm when things go wrong. After a while, unexpected challenges don’t feel dramatic. They feel normal. You learn not to overreact, not to panic, and not to make the situation worse by delaying action.

There are also lessons in reflection and anticipation. When something goes wrong, you ask yourself how to prevent it next time. Then you adjust and prepare. That’s how experience becomes wisdom.

Everyone faces unexpected challenges. That’s not bad luck. It’s life. The difference between stress and confidence is deciding to deal with what matters most right now and moving forward without hesitation.
